Bear-ack Obama Bear
Visitors at the newly opened Teddy Bear World in Waikiki, Hawaii may do a double take at the Oval-Office like exhibit featuring “Bear-ack” Obama, a life-sized teddy bear dressed up to look like Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States. Despite all the pomp and circumstance, this quite large piece of political plush is quite approachable – no secret service around, so maybe supporters can sneak in a quick hug or photo opportunity! It is very fitting that this teddy bear tribute is located it Hawaii, it is the birthplace of Barack Obama after all. All hail to the chief, this plush stuffed animal is wearing a dark suit and a red power-tie –this big-wig bear and furry doppelganger for the real man himself. Giant teddy bears are all the rage these days, bigger is definitely better. While we don’t have the Barack bear in stock (that’s a certified one-of-a-kind), we do have many super-sized bears that will make quite a statement to give as a gift or keep in your own teddy bear collection.
Teddy Bears In Paradise
Teddy Bear World has hit Hawaii bringing a tidal wave of unique, unusual and utterly amazing bears and stuffed animals to Waikiki. This $5 million attraction featuring hundreds of elaborately costumed teddy bears is the first to be built outside of Korea, the birthplace of Teddy Bear World. In fact, Korea is such a teddy bear-loving country that the nation boasts four franchises of these museums honoring plush pals. Forget the beach and the volcanoes, no trip to the Hawaiian Islands would be complete for the teddy bear lover without a quick trip over to this loveable attraction.
Filled with whimsical bear-themed exhibits and intricate dioramas such as NASA and White House scenes, this museum of teddy bears opened on the island November 6, 2010. Visitors can learn about the history of teddy bears; admire valuable antique, collectible and unusual teddy bears; and appreciate renditions of famous artwork that is painted with the faces of teddy bears. The museum is open from 10am to 10pm daily and admission is $15 for adults and $11 for juniors and seniors (children under 4 free).
Tale of Tum-Tum
As stoic and manly as my 49-year husband comes across, he still reminisces fondly about his stuffed teddy bear from childhood. His parents took him down to the local dime store to pick out a gift, and my then 5-year-old husband laid eyes on a black and white teddy bear that he later named “Tum-Tum” and the two were apparently inseparable. I laughed when he told me that he had what I would consider a “luvie,” but my husband assured me that he saw the teddy bear as an all-purpose boy toy, like a GI Joe. He said he had much more fun pretending that his teddy bear Tum-Tum was a Godzilla-style monster towering above his little plastic army men than dragging him around under his arm like a security blanket or trying to sleep with him. However, I beg to questions his nonchalance considering that he still has Tum-Tum tucked safely in the back of this closet. Although a little worse-for-the-wear, the teddy bear reportedly survived a traumatizing muddle-puddle-to-washing-machine incident which resulted in the loss of his two button eyes. While electronic games and toys with all the bells and whistles are popular today, you will never go wrong letting the young guy in your life pick out a teddy bear plush pal that will create lifelong memories.
Mark Wahlberg Loves His “Ted”
Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame has been working on a partly computer-animated movie called Ted that is being budgeted at $65 million. The premise of the flick is a little unusual; a grown man from Boston has a “living” teddy bear for a best friend thanks to a childhood wish come true apparently, the teddy bear isn’t your typical warm and cuddly bear. Instead, the stuffed animal is a foul-mouthed, carousing animal with quite a bad attitude. And, it’s this snide, slacker attitude of his sidekick (along with the fact that a grown guy still talks to his teddy) that keeps the character from ultimately getting the girl. The teddy bear will be brought to life with CGI and will be voiced by MacFarlane himself while the socially-stumped guy will be played by actor Mark Wahlberg. Live out your dreams for a living teddy bear with one of the giant teddy bears from My Teddy Bear Shop, some of them are practically life-sized. Who knows, maybe your special wish will make it come true!
Thanksgiving Is Coming!
Now that Halloween has come and gone retailers are focusing on Christmas and the winter holidays. Mere hours after the last trick-or-treater left my house, the shelf stockers at the neighborhood big box store were already hauling out the proverbial holly! But, let’s not forget to remember and be thankful for Thanksgiving which falls on November 25th this year. After all, it was the Pilgrims who travelled perilously over the pond to colonize and eventually make this country the place it is today – where you can celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza or whatever floats your boat.
Many associate Thanksgiving with eating turkey. While there is no evidence that the Pilgrims were served turkey at the first Thanksgiving, it did become part of the feasting tradition a few years later. In the historical accounting “The History of Plymouth Plantation,” William Bradford makes a comment about dispatching “four men out fowling” and having them return with turkeys, geese and ducks for dinner. Turkeys became so popular in America that statesman Benjamin Franklin wanted to name the turkey as the national bird rather than the bald eagle.
Celebrate this day of thanks giving with Gund’s adorable Trudie the Turkey, a great alternative to a harvest teddy bear. Full of pluck and cluck, this cute stuffed animal even plays “The Chicken Dance” and moves its feet to the music!
Raining Teddy Bears & Stuffed Animals
Children can often amass a huge menagerie of stuffed animals and teddy bears? What’s a mom or dad to do when the parade of plush pals is piled so high on the bed that a kiddo can’t even get under the covers to go to sleep? When your budding actrophile runs out of display space on the bed, toy box or play room shelves, it’s time to get creative about anti-clutter remedies. Instead of looking down toward the floor or straight ahead to a closet, look up instead! Overhead provides oodles and oodles of un-utilized space for a teddy bear collection. There are several options to creating an above eye-level display space for your stuffed animals. First, you can attach a pole in the corner of the room and clip the teddy bears on as if they were climbing up a tree! Or, you can get a mesh hammock and hang it corner-to-corner at the ceiling and pile all the furry friends in for a rest. Another fun idea is to anchor a ladder (so a child won’t pull it down) and stack stuffed animals all the way up – just make sure your kid is old enough for the safety issues here. And, finally, for those smaller plush toys that aren’t played with as much, attach a colorful ribbon and dangle from the ceiling like it’s raining teddy bears and stuffed animals!
What’s That Fur Made From?
Ever wonder what teddy bear fur is made from? High-end, collectable teddy bears from companies like Stieff or Gund are often made from mohair, alpaca or a blend of the two. Mohair is the hair shorn from a specific kind of goat and Alpacas, an animal resembling a small llama; also provide a similar type of fibers. Both of these shorn fibers can be used to create textiles such as yarn, flat fabric and plush that are used in upscale teddy bears.
Wool is another common natural fiber that is found in teddy bear fur, and is taken and processed from sheep in the same manner as the Mohair and Alpacas. We’ve also seen teddy bears made from a variety of leathers and the pelts from certain animals such as rabbits and minks. A non-animal obtained “skin” for teddy bears is 100-percent cotton, which also makes a great choice for teddy bear lovers who are burden with allergies. Cotton can take even provide character to a teddy bear that is knitted, crochets, patch-worked or otherwise crafted together.
The majority of mass-produced teddy bears are made from plush, synthetic fur that comes in a rainbow array of colors, piles and textures. The benefit of synthetic furs is that it allows teddy bears to be created inexpensively and does not bother those with allergies as much, especially if the filling is hypo-allergenic as well. Get your hands on a teddy bear wrapped in awesome fur by checking out My Teddy Bear Shop.
Teddy Bear Fur Goes High Fashion
We’ve heard of a teddy bear being made out of the fur coat once belonging to a dearly departed grandma, but we haven’t heard of a coat being fashioned from teddy bear fur – until today. When thinking about faux-fur options for his fall collection, creative director Thomas Maier from fashion house Bottega Veneta went crazy for the wool and alpaca combination that many Stieff stuffed animals are covered in. If these pretend pelts are good enough for the venerable German teddy bear maker, then they are good enough for this creator of haut couture. Maier says that a wool and alpaca blend makes the perfect combination for the pretend pelt used on his bitter melon mélange wool fur coat because it has a fuzzy, fur-like nap and holds up well over time. Perhaps further inspiration for his elegant imitation fur coats – his admission that he still owns his childhood teddy bear!
